Welcome to Newcastle Community Food Initiative

The Community Food Initiative aims to improve access to healthy, affordable food especially for disadvantaged groups, throughout the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

  • We facilitate local food networks.
  • We provide small start up grants to projects in Newcastle.
  • We give advice and information.
  • We can help with many aspects of developing a food project, e.g. providing resources, help with fundraising, signposting, publicity and sharing our ideas and experience.
  • We hold events to share good practice and work together.
  • We link our food projects with local, regional and national food policies and strategies.
  • We raise awareness of the food issues faced by people in Newcastle and the good work achieved by local food projects (over 70 across the city).

Deaflink Healthy Eating Project

The Community Food Initiative and Deaflink (both projects of Newcastle Healthy City) have been working in partnership with other organisations to develop a healthy eating resource for the D/deaf community. Following a successful research project, a British Sign Language/subtitled healthy eating DVD and training package were produced and are now available to buy.

If you would like a research report, DVD and/or training pack please contact Deaflink on 0191 2113594.

Report on Food and Health Community Based Activity in Newcastle

In August 2009, the Community Food Initiative carried out an audit of community food and health related activity. The resulting report highlights the wide variety of community food and health activities happening across the city, that are working together to tackle health inequalities. It gives an insight into the communities accessing the services, how these services are sustained and what the main food related issues of their service users are, as well as other interesting information. The report demonstrates the value of community based food and health activity in Newcastle and how this work impacts on the health of local communities. Click here
