The Food Growing Initiative

The Food Growing Initiative came to an end in October 2007.
The Community Food Initiative, as a Newcastle Healthy City Project, developed the Newcastle Food Growing Initiative with support from local partners including Newcastle Primary Care Trust, Newcastle City Council and the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens.
Originally funded through the Newcastle School Food Initiative (Newcastle Primary Care Trust). Newcastle employed two part time food growing workers to give hands on support to community groups and schools in growing their own food. The Food Growing Initiative received funding from the SEED Programme to continue to develop this work. The second phase of the Food Growing Initiative was funded by The Tudor Trust, continuing the employment of one part-time food growing worker. involved.
The work of the Food Growing Initiative came to an end in October 2007. Since 2002, Healthy City Project's Food Growing Worker, Mike Proctor, has worked with many community groups and schools across the city, supporting groups to grow food on allotments and gardens, in pots and planters - growing food no matter how limited the resources!
The following resources were produced by the Food Growing Initiative to help support people to grow food:
The 'Food Growing Guide' for community groups provides information and advice around food growing covering subjects including what to grow, planting schemes, harvesting and organic growing.
The 'School's Food Growing Guide' plus 'Grow and Learn' provide schools with information and advice about food growing and how to link food growing with the curriculum for key stages 1 and 2.
