Regional Health and Well-being Strategy Launch
‘Better Health, Fairer Health’

The area's first ever health and well-being strategy aims to make people living here the healthiest in the country within a generation.
Dr Stephen Singleton, Regional Director for Public Health, is leading the strategy that was developed following a three-month consultation that attracted over 100 responses, including involvement from voluntary and community organisations. The strategy identifies priorities across the key themes, one of the key themes is ‘obesity, diet and physical activity’. Potential areas for action include the ‘value of cooking skills training’ and ‘the role of access to food in different communities’.

Food Matters: Towards a Strategy for the 21st Century. The report looks at long-term trends in food production and consumption, and the impacts that food production and consumption has both on our health and on the environment. It sets out a future strategic framework for food policy and practical measures for addressing issues around food and health, food and the environment and other concerns.

Weighing up the Advantages: A new role for councils in tackling obesity

The report calls for all councils to adopt an obesity strategy as part of their Local Area Agreements. The report looks at a sample of six UK local authorities to assess how well they were tackling obesity at a local level and found an extreme variation in the amount of work undertaken. The report highlights policies that appear to be working well such as the work of Westminster Council in improving access to healthy food in poorer areas and improving access to physical activity opportunities for adults.

‘Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives’

This cross-government strategy is the first step in a sustained programme to support people to maintain a healthy weight. It will be followed by a public annual report that assesses progress, looks at the latest evidence and trends, and makes recommendations for further action.
Aims to reverse the rising tide of obesity and overweight in the population by ensuring that everyone is able to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Initial focus will be on children: by 2020, aim to reduce the proportion of overweight and obese children to 2000 levels.

In August 2009, the Community Food Initiative carried out an audit of community food and health related activity. The resulting report highlights the wide variety of community food and health activities happening across the city, that are working together to tackle health inequalities. It gives an insight into the communities accessing the services, how these services are sustained and what the main food related issues of their service users are, as well as other interesting information. The report demonstrates the value of community based food and health activity in Newcastle and how this work impacts on the health of local communities. Click here

Newcastle Obesity Group & the Eat Well Group: Update

The Newcastle Obesity Strategy and Action Plan feeds into the Newcastle Health Improvement Strategy and Children and Young People’s Plan. Representatives from the Primary Care Trust and other health partners, the Local Authority, Universities and community and voluntary groups, are currently developing the Obesity Action Plan. The Newcastle Community Food Initiative is a member of this group to represent the views of community food projects across the city and feed back what is happening.
The monitoring of the action plan objectives has ceased until the new structure of the Wellbeing and Health Partnership is confirmed. It is expected that the CFI will still have a role collating the information for the Obesity Strategy but also a role on the new Eat Well Group. More information will follow.
